Nothing in the world is as beautiful as a baby's laugh—and that unique, special moment for a mother when, for the very first time, a tiny, pearly-white tooth flashes from your sunshine's mouth!

Table of Contents

Some teeth surprise you and your baby almost "overnight," while others announce themselves weeks in advance.

What Does "Teething" Actually Mean?

When your baby is teething, the 20 milk teeth gradually push their way through the gums. About four weeks usually pass between the first signs of redness and the tiny tooth finally peeking through.

When the first tooth sparkles is highly individual and largely genetic. And yes, it is true: on very rare occasions, a baby is born with a visible tooth! For most babies, however, the journey begins between the 5th and 10th month of life. By their third birthday, a full set of baby teeth is usually complete.

What Teething Symptoms are Typical?

The good news: teething discomfort is usually mild and temporary.

Possible signs of teething:

  • increased drooling and salivation
  • flushed, warm cheeks
  • increased need to chew on objects or putting fingers in the mouth
  • red, sensitive, or swollen gums
  • your baby is irritable and wants to be carried and cuddled a lot
  • mild diarrhea or a sore bottom
  • a slightly elevated temperature

Important: High fever over 38 °C (100.4 °F), severe diarrhea, or clear signs of illness are not typical symptoms of teething. In these cases, please consult your pediatrician to rule out other causes.

What Helps with Teething?

We have gathered a few helpful tips and tricks to make teething just a little bit easier for your baby—and for you:

  • A chilled teething ring: Please only place the teething ring in the refrigerator, never in the freezer, as extremely cold temperatures can damage the delicate oral mucous membranes.
  • A cool, damp washcloth: A damp, cool cotton washcloth to chew on feels wonderful (for hygiene reasons, please replace it regularly).
  • Gentle jaw massage: Massage the gums very carefully with your clean, bare finger.
  • Your loving closeness: Carrying, cuddling, and reassurance have a deeply soothing effect on your baby and offer the best comfort during this phase. You can also find more advice in our guide Your Baby is Teething.

If a new tooth is giving your baby a particularly hard time and they are clearly suffering, your pediatrician will be happy to assist with safe, child-friendly recommendations.

Dental Care for Your Mini's Smile

Your baby loves rituals, as they provide a sense of security. This is how healthy habits are gently formed from an early age. As a mother, you can lay the perfect foundation for healthy teeth early on—playfully and completely without pressure.

Before the First Tooth

Even before the first tooth pushes through, you can gently massage your baby's gums daily with a damp, soft cloth or a soft silicone finger toothbrush. This helps your child get used to the feeling of oral hygiene early on.

From the First Tooth

As soon as the first white tip becomes visible, active dental care begins:

  • No constant sucking: Avoid prolonged sucking on bottles filled with sweet or acidic beverages, including the nighttime milk bottle, to prevent early childhood tooth decay (caries).
  • Regular brushing: Brush the new teeth twice daily with a soft, age-appropriate baby toothbrush.
  • The right toothpaste: If your baby does not receive fluoride tablets, brush with a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride-containing children's toothpaste. If your baby is taking fluoride tablets, we recommend Töpfer Babycare Tooth Gel. With natural silica and xylitol, it ensures highly effective yet gentle oral hygiene without damaging the delicate, soft tooth enamel of milk teeth.

Tip for daily life: Simply take your baby along to your own dental check-ups. This allows them to get to know the environment in a playful way. Ideally, your baby and your dentist will get to know each other completely relaxed before their first birthday 🤍.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When do babies usually start teething?

For most babies, the first milk tooth emerges between the 5th and 10th month of life. In very rare cases, babies are born with a visible tooth. By age three, the primary dentition with 20 teeth is usually complete.

Which teething symptoms indicate the first teeth are coming?

Typical teething symptoms include heavy drooling, flushed cheeks, swollen or sensitive gums, and an increased urge to chew on objects or their own fingers. Many babies are also clingier and more restless than usual during this time.

Can teething cause fever or diarrhea in babies?

Teething itself does not cause a high fever. However, the immune system is slightly challenged during this phase, which can lead to a mildly elevated temperature or slightly looser stools. In case of a real fever over 38 °C or persistent diarrhea, always consult a pediatrician to clarify the cause.

How should I care for my baby's first teeth?

As soon as the first tooth appears, you should brush twice daily using a soft baby toothbrush. If your child takes fluoride tablets, a fluoride-free product like Töpfer Babycare Tooth Gel is the ideal choice to gently clean the delicate, developing tooth enamel.

  • Classification of the Current Situation Zobrazit Skrýt
    1. What are the current recalls about?

According to publicly available information, the heat-stable toxin cereulide was associated with a specific issue during the fermentation of a raw material at the supplier level.

    2. Is Töpfer affected by these recalls?
No. Our products are not affected. Our supply chains are independent of the publicly mentioned problematic supply chains. Safety and control are our top priorities from the very beginning.

    3. Has the safety of Töpfer products been reviewed?
Töpfer products are subject to a multi-stage, strict control and verification process throughout the entire value chain. This process is an integral part of our quality promise and ensures the special Töpfer quality.

  • Cause of the Recalls – Technical Classification Zobrazit Skrýt
    1. What exactly is cereulide?
    Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin.
Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin. This means: once it has been formed, it cannot be destroyed by normal heating.

    2. When does cereulide form?
Cereulide does not automatically form due to the presence of the bacterium itself. It only develops under very specific conditions, especially:

    ✓ certain temperature ranges
    ✓ sufficient moisture
    ✓ suitable nutrient conditions
    ✓ extended growth time

Typically, this occurs in improperly stored starchy foods or, as discussed in the current case, under specific fermentation conditions of a raw material.

    3. Does cereulide form in dry infant formula?
No. Dry infant formula does not provide the conditions required for cereulide formation. The toxin can only develop if it has already been formed previously under moist conditions.

    4. Why is cereulide relevant?
In higher amounts, cereulide can cause nausea and vomiting. For this reason, raw materials are strictly controlled before being used in food products.
  • Production and Independence Zobrazit Skrýt
    1. Does Töpfer produce together with other brands?
No. Töpfer manufactures exclusively at its own production facility in the Allgäu region of Germany. We do not share production lines or facilities with other manufacturers. This independence is a central component of our quality strategy.

2.Are there overlaps in the supply chain with affected brands?
No. Our regulatory reviews and supplier audits show no connections to the publicly mentioned problematic supply chains. Each raw material at Töpfer is independently qualified, tested, and approved, regardless of the supply chains used by other manufacturers.

    3. Where do Töpfer’s raw materials come from?
Our focus is on organic quality as well as regional and European sourcing. The majority of our raw materials originate from the Allgäu region, from Germany, or from Europe. This proximity ensures quality, transparency, and traceability.

    4. Are raw materials from outside the EU used?
Certain raw materials are unfortunately only available in limited quantities worldwide. Even if such raw materials are used occasionally, our strict EU-based quality and control standards apply without exception. Procurement is carried out exclusively through qualified, long-standing, and continuously audited partners within the DACH region.

    5. Has Töpfer sourced raw materials from Cabio Biotech?
No. Töpfer has never sourced raw materials from Cabio Biotech for its production.
