"I slept like a baby!" We have all said or heard this phrase at some point. But how does your baby actually sleep, and how can you support them when it is time to go to sleep?

Understanding Baby Sleep Cycles

The most important information first: baby sleep behavior is completely different from adult sleep, and every child sleeps differently. There is no such thing as "one-size-fits-all" baby sleep.

The sleep cycles of your infant are significantly shorter, which means they experience a much more frequent transition between light sleep (REM sleep) and deep sleep phases. Especially in the first few weeks after birth, a high proportion of REM phases is observable, which is vital for rapid brain development.

Frequent movements, small noises, and waking up in the night are completely normal. Human babies develop a biological day-night rhythm at the earliest around the sixth week of life. However, you can already support your baby during the very first nights.

For the night, the following rules apply:

  • No bright light: A dimmable nightlight is highly recommended.
  • No loud noises or conversations: Keep voices down; a few whispered, reassuring words are plenty.
  • Everyone stays in bed: If possible, diaper changes, breastfeeding, or feeding should take place directly in your bed or bedroom.

While the daytime sleep environment can certainly be bright, with everyday noises and conversations allowed, everything should be as minimal and quiet as possible during the night. This teaches your baby that adventures and active times happen during the day, while the night is reserved for rest.

Of course, we are not talking about "sleeping through the night" just yet. Nighttime waking can occur well into preschool age and is perfectly natural. Expecting your tiny baby to sleep through the night as quickly as possible should never be the goal, even if it is frequently promoted in Western cultures.

"The Day Decides the Night"

Especially during the first few months of life, your little one has very short awake phases. Approximately every 50 to 60 minutes, your baby will grow quieter and signal a need for rest and recovery. If you do not react in time and gently guide them to sleep, it can lead to long periods of restlessness, overtiredness, and crying.

Once overtired, it takes a significantly longer time for your child to settle down. Nature provides us with a natural daytime rhythm. In fact, most babies sleep much more peacefully at night if the day has a predictable structure and small daytime naps are kept throughout the day.

This leaves the big question: How can you as parents gently guide your baby to sleep?

First and foremost, it is important to take the pressure off yourselves. Stress, worry, and inner restlessness easily transfer to your baby, which prevents relaxation and eventually makes falling asleep much harder.

Infants require a deep sense of security, physical warmth, contact, a familiar environment, and a relaxed caregiver to ease peacefully into sleep. Developing a loving bedtime routine or a comforting ritual that signals safety and coziness to both you and your child is essential.

Whether you nurse or bottle-feed your baby to sleep, gently rock them in a baby carrier or wrap, walk them in the stroller, or let them drift off during a car ride—whatever works and feels comfortable for your family is exactly the right path.

Understanding Subtle Cues

Falling asleep in the evening is often a challenge for many babies. The experiences of the day must be processed, and "letting go" can be difficult. The timing of your bedtime attempt is crucial.

Rubbing eyes, yawning, a blank stare, and sudden restlessness are typical tiredness cues. Now is the time to transition into sleep by starting your comforting routine, such as a warm bath or wash, soft singing, gentle stroking, cuddling, or rocking.

You do not need to worry about spoiling your baby or encouraging bad habits. Your baby is simply learning that falling asleep is a safe, cozy, and pleasant experience. The sleep environment should be deliberately unstimulating, quiet, dark, and characterized by gentle, rhythmic movements. Even the smallest sensory stimulus can wake an infant. Try to keep yourselves relaxed and avoid constantly focusing on the stressful thought, "When will you finally sleep?"

Perhaps you would like to lay your baby down in the evening to catch up on some chores or simply enjoy a quiet moment of well-deserved me-time. Our little "Stone Age babies" have highly sensitive sensors and feel changes in pressure, position, and temperature immediately. This is why so many infants wake up the exact second they are laid down.

If your baby has fallen asleep warm and cuddled up in your arms, try to maintain this position for at least 20 minutes to ensure they have reached a state of deep sleep. You can test this by gently lifting your baby's arm and letting it go: if the arm falls completely limp like a doll's, your little one is sleeping deeply enough.

Make sure the surface you lay them on is warm and snug (not cold sheets), and do not break physical contact immediately after laying them down. You can lie down next to your baby for a moment or keep a warm hand with gentle, steady pressure on their chest or belly. Avoid laying your child flat on their back from above. It is far more soothing to gently roll them down onto their feet, bottom, and side, and only then roll them onto their back. A rolled-up towel can be placed near their body to create a comforting feeling of physical boundary. Humming softly can provide additional reassurance.

Feeling Secure – Even in Sleep

Peaceful days and relaxed nights with a baby are the ultimate wish for every new parent. An affectionate, responsive, and attachment-oriented approach to baby sleep is based entirely on your baby's needs, gives them safety, and strengthens their lifelong trust in your relationship.

By responding warmly to your child's signals, you accept their unique individual development and reduce overall stress for the entire family. In doing so, you are laying the perfect foundation for healthy sleeping habits. Every family must get to know their own rhythm and find a path that brings peace and comfort to everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does baby sleep differ from adult sleep?

Baby sleep behavior is characterized by much shorter sleep cycles. Infants cycle much more frequently between light sleep (REM sleep) and deep sleep phases. This frequent transition is essential for their rapid neurological and brain development in the first few months.

When do babies develop a day-night rhythm?

A biological day-night rhythm begins to establish itself at the earliest from the sixth week of life. You can support this development by making the nighttime sleep environment dark, quiet, and low-stimulus, while keeping the daytime environment bright with normal household noises.

What are the best bedtime routine tips for restless babies?

The most important tip is to establish a predictable, relaxed bedtime routine. This includes recognizing early tiredness cues (yawning, eye rubbing), keeping the evening unstimulating, and offering plenty of physical closeness, such as through breastfeeding, rocking, or cuddling.

Why does my baby wake up immediately when I lay them down?

Babies have highly sensitive receptors for temperature and position changes. To prevent them from waking, wait until they are in a deep sleep phase (approx. 20 minutes after drifting off). When laying them down, roll them down very slowly onto their side first, rather than laying them flat on their back, and maintain physical contact with your hand for a few moments.

  • Cause of the Recalls – Technical Classification Zobrazit Skrýt
    1. What exactly is cereulide?
    Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin.
Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin. This means: once it has been formed, it cannot be destroyed by normal heating.

    2. When does cereulide form?
Cereulide does not automatically form due to the presence of the bacterium itself. It only develops under very specific conditions, especially:

    ✓ certain temperature ranges
    ✓ sufficient moisture
    ✓ suitable nutrient conditions
    ✓ extended growth time

Typically, this occurs in improperly stored starchy foods or, as discussed in the current case, under specific fermentation conditions of a raw material.

    3. Does cereulide form in dry infant formula?
No. Dry infant formula does not provide the conditions required for cereulide formation. The toxin can only develop if it has already been formed previously under moist conditions.

    4. Why is cereulide relevant?
In higher amounts, cereulide can cause nausea and vomiting. For this reason, raw materials are strictly controlled before being used in food products.
