Current Infant Formula Recalls

  • Classification of the Current Situation Show Hide
    1. What are the current recalls about?
In recent weeks, media outlets have reported on recalls of infant formula products from certain international manufacturers. According to publicly available information, the heat-stable toxin cereulide was associated with a specific issue during the fermentation of a raw material at the supplier level.

    2. Is Töpfer affected by these recalls?
No. Our products are not affected. Our supply chains are independent of the publicly mentioned problematic supply chains. Safety and control are our top priorities from the very beginning.

    3. Has the safety of Töpfer products been reviewed?
Töpfer products are subject to a multi-stage, strict control and verification process throughout the entire value chain. This process is an integral part of our quality promise and ensures the special Töpfer quality.

In addition, Töpfer is monitored by the competent Bavarian food control authority. Our products and processes are regularly inspected by authorities.

In connection with the current recalls, the responsible Bavarian Authority for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs reviewed our supplier declarations, analytical data, and our testing and release procedures. The requested documentation was accepted.

Based on our comprehensive testing and control systems, Töpfer products are not affected and can be used without restriction.
  • Cause of the Recalls – Technical Classification Show Hide
    1. What exactly is cereulide?
    Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin.
Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin. This means: once it has been formed, it cannot be destroyed by normal heating.

    2. When does cereulide form?
Cereulide does not automatically form due to the presence of the bacterium itself. It only develops under very specific conditions, especially:

    ✓ certain temperature ranges
    ✓ sufficient moisture
    ✓ suitable nutrient conditions
    ✓ extended growth time

Typically, this occurs in improperly stored starchy foods or, as discussed in the current case, under specific fermentation conditions of a raw material.

    3. Does cereulide form in dry infant formula?
No. Dry infant formula does not provide the conditions required for cereulide formation. The toxin can only develop if it has already been formed previously under moist conditions.

    4. Why is cereulide relevant?
In higher amounts, cereulide can cause nausea and vomiting. For this reason, raw materials are strictly controlled before being used in food products.
  • Production and Independence Show Hide
    1. Does Töpfer produce together with other brands?
No. Töpfer manufactures exclusively at its own production facility in the Allgäu region of Germany. We do not share production lines or facilities with other manufacturers. This independence is a central component of our quality strategy.

2.Are there overlaps in the supply chain with affected brands?
No. Our regulatory reviews and supplier audits show no connections to the publicly mentioned problematic supply chains. Each raw material at Töpfer is independently qualified, tested, and approved, regardless of the supply chains used by other manufacturers.

    3. Where do Töpfer’s raw materials come from?
Our focus is on organic quality as well as regional and European sourcing. The majority of our raw materials originate from the Allgäu region, from Germany, or from Europe. This proximity ensures quality, transparency, and traceability.

    4. Are raw materials from outside the EU used?
Certain raw materials are unfortunately only available in limited quantities worldwide. Even if such raw materials are used occasionally, our strict EU-based quality and control standards apply without exception. Procurement is carried out exclusively through qualified, long-standing, and continuously audited partners within the DACH region.

    5. Has Töpfer sourced raw materials from Cabio Biotech?
No. Töpfer has never sourced raw materials from Cabio Biotech for its production.
  • Quality Assurance Show Hide
    1. How does Töpfer ensure the quality of its raw materials?
At Töpfer, quality begins with the raw materials. We work exclusively with long-standing qualified partners based on clearly defined specifications. Each relevant batch is tested before being used.

    2. Are microbiological tests conducted?
Yes. Both raw materials and intermediate and finished products are comprehensively tested microbiologically, in our own laboratories and additionally by external accredited institutes.

    3. Are chemical and contaminant analyses conducted?
Yes. Our quality control includes comprehensive chemical testing in accordance with legal requirements and internal quality standards.

    4. Is there a release procedure before products are placed on the market?
Yes. No product leaves our facility without a complete quality inspection and formal release.

    5. Have testing procedures been adjusted to new limit values?
Yes. Our analytical procedures have been aligned with updated scientific evaluation standards. New limit values do not indicate new risks but rather provide additional safety.

    6. Have there been any recalls of Töpfer products in recent years?
No. In recent years, there have been no recalls or official quality warnings due to contamination or non-compliant ingredients.

  • How do I prepare a baby bottle correctly? Show Hide
Here’s your guide to preparing our milk formula. It’s not rocket science — but we want to make sure your little one always gets the very best. 1. Start with fresh drinking water. Boil it, then let it cool down to about 40–50 °C. 2. Pour half of the required water into the bottle. 3. Add the formula powder. The exact amount is shown in the feeding table. Simply fill the measuring spoon, level it off, and add it to the bottle. 4. Close the bottle and shake it well until the powder is completely dissolved. 5. Add the rest of the water and shake again. Tip: If your baby tends to swallow a lot of air, you can also stir the formula gently with a clean plastic or stainless steel spoon. Just make sure the powder dissolves fully. 6. Finally, check the drinking temperature. We recommend around 37 °C — so your baby doesn’t burn their tongue. And voilà — the perfect bottle is ready. Time for the milk party!
  • How long does infant formula last after opening the package? Show Hide
Here are a few tips to help you keep our products fresh and safe for your little one. Once you open the package, you should use it up within two weeks. Don’t worry — that won’t be difficult, since our formula is so tasty your baby won’t get enough of it! To keep it fresh, store the package in a dry place. Please don’t leave it open or transfer it into other containers — our products don’t like that. And don’t forget: the measuring spoon should also be kept clean and dry so you can always measure the right amount. After each feed, it’s time to clean up: make sure to wash the bottle, teat, and ring thoroughly. It might be a bit of work, but it’s important for your baby’s health.

Ingredients & Nutrition

  • Why is organic wheat bran in many Töpfer baby care products? Isn’t that more for muesli? Show Hide
Wheat bran is a valuable product made from the wheat grain — including the germ, outer layers, and husk. And for good reason, it’s one of the most important ingredients in the Töpfer Babycare range: its unique composition of protective wheat protein, moisture-binding plant mucilages (arabinoxylans), a high content of antioxidant vitamins E and C, cell-protecting carotenoids, and the natural antioxidant ferulic acid nourishes delicate baby skin and soothes irritated and sensitive skin. In our products, we only use gluten-free organic wheat bran extract. You can find gluten-free organic wheat bran extract in these Töpfer Babycare and Mamacare products: • Babycare Wind & Weather Calendula Cream • Babycare Body Lotion • Babycare Care Cream • Babycare Care & Massage Oil • Babycare Baby Powder • Babycare Shampoo • Babycare Wash Gel • Babycare Nappy Cream • Babycare Tooth Gel • Mamacare Nipple Cream
  • What does argan oil do for the skin? Show Hide
The argan tree, whose kernels are used to produce argan oil, grows exclusively in Morocco on the edge of the Atlas Mountains. The nuts are collected in the wild and harvested only by hand, often by women’s cooperatives who make their living this way. Known as the “gold of Morocco,” argan oil is moisturizing, cell-protecting, regenerating, and antibacterial. In cosmetics, it is used for skin, hair, and nail care, as well as to support skin with impurities, acne, or psoriasis. Its active ingredients also help prevent skin aging and strengthen connective tissue. With regular use, this quickly absorbed, pleasantly light nut oil can also help prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. In addition, chefs value argan oil for its delicious taste and its ability to support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In Töpfer Mamacare Massage & Care Oil, organic argan oil is one of the natural nourishing ingredients.
  • I’ve never heard of marula oil before — what is it used for? Show Hide
Marula oil is extracted from the hard seeds of the South African marula tree. Among the Zulu people, it is a symbol of softness, tenderness, and fertility. It even plays an important role in cultural birth ceremonies, where it is used to welcome newborns into the world. When it comes to healthy skin, marula oil is a true all-rounder. It helps bind moisture and, thanks to its replenishing properties, supports the skin’s natural lipid barrier. By reducing moisture loss, this well-tolerated oil effectively counteracts skin irritation and redness. Its high vitamin C content stimulates collagen production, which also helps support connective tissue. Scientific studies confirm that the fatty acids in marula oil can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, making it more elastic. Organic marula oil is one of the natural care ingredients in Töpfer Mamacare Massage & Care Oil.
  • What does zinc oxide do in baby creams? Show Hide
Zinc is a natural, essential trace element that is found in almost every cell of the human body. It plays a role in many metabolic processes and is especially important for growth and healing. We humans take in around 12–15 mg of zinc every day through food. Zinc oxide, a white powder with high coverage, is produced in different particle sizes from purified zinc ore. It has been used since the 19th century as a base for powders because of its disinfecting, anti-inflammatory, soothing, and drying properties. Zinc oxide promotes wound healing and helps build new, healthy skin. That’s why creams and ointments containing zinc oxide are so effective in caring for irritated or reddened skin — both for babies and adults. In our Töpfer Babycare Nappy Cream, we use only non-nano zinc oxide.
  • Is there a difference between xylit and xylitol? Show Hide
No — both terms refer to the same sweetener, often called “birch sugar.” It was originally extracted from the bark of Finnish birch trees, but today it is usually produced from corn starch using specific enzymes. Xylitol has a similar sweetness to household sugar and can be processed in the same way as a fine, white, crystalline powder. When it comes to dental health and cavity prevention, however, sugar and xylitol are very different. Unlike regular sugar, xylitol actively interferes with bacterial metabolism, reducing harmful acid production. This keeps the pH level in the mouth from dropping below 5.5. As a result, bacterial growth and their ability to stick to teeth are inhibited, since plaque formation only occurs in an acidic environment. Another benefit: when xylitol dissolves in the mouth, it stimulates saliva production. Saliva contains calcium phosphate, which is important for forming and strengthening tooth enamel — and more saliva also helps dilute acids. Xylitol CX is one of the key ingredients in our Töpfer Babycare Tooth Gel.
